Vallum Farm - a country haven right on our doorstep
Quite some weeks ago now I was invited down to an evening showcasing 'what's new at Vallum'. I love this place, and ever since the addition of David Kennedy opening up his restaurant and deli, it's flourished into a community of local suppliers and producers.
It's no secret, I LOVE ALL THE CAKE. I just can't ever turn it down - however these days I am quite the cake snob. I find it quite hard to find really good cakes in Newcastle. When I mean cake, I mean an individually decorated piece of cake art, and not just a slice of bulk bake with a load of cream. I nearly skipped my height when I clocked the new cake display in the David Kennedy at Vallum Shop. I did buy a couple to take home, and I did tweet after the event that the pastry was akin to that of Paris. I stand by it and challenge anyone to compete.
On the showcase evening, there was a bounty of cheese on offer to try in different ways, along with some delightfully paired wines from Marta Vine Ltd. My particular favourite cheese was the Hadrians Wall Coulommier - so creamy and dangerously addictive. Available to buy in the shop, it's a great addition to an at-home cheese board.
On a sunny day it's a perfect haven for sitting with a cup of tea and looking out on the hard working fields of Ken Holland, and really appreciating the North East. Even when it's raining, you can hide inside the cosiness of the country cafe, feeling smug that you live in the best place in the world, and this place is on your doorstep.
