Cal's back...

Just a quick post this week, mainly as I have pizza on my mind. Cal's Own pizza in fact. I've missed Cal, and for those of you that don't know - Cal's Own is the best pizza place in town. Now that's not a term I just hand out for the laughs; it is actually the best place for pizza in town. This April sees the re-opening in a new location, and a new beast of an oven. I've never been so excited to go and visit an oven before, but a few weeks ago I got a sneak peek at the dreamy Stefano Ferrera that is Cal's pride and joy. I mean, look at it...

Cal made us a couple of pizzas on the fly in the middle of the refurb, and they were gooooood. It's a romantic moment, eating fresh pizza straight out of the roaring fired oven, sparking memories from all of the amazing pizzas that we have come to know and love from Cal's Own. If you didn't get chance to visit the humble start-up on Chillingham Road, give this review from Newcastle Eats a read. The old haunt was a regular on our dining out agenda, and one for our many visiting friends. Tremendously sourced ingredients (DOP no less) and a finely tuned kitchen make for sweet eats. The vibe was laid back, it didn't break the bank, and you never left hungry. We also never left without take-out for laters either.

The main differences you'll see in Jesmond is the char you get on the bases is just unreal from the heat coming from the oven, an extended menu and also a license (farewell BYOB). The one thing that remains, is Cal's passion for producing amazing food for us very grateful folk. The move to Jesmond is a wise one; more covers, more exposure, and most of all; this will have more of a restaurant feel. I'm not alone in counting down the days until I can indulge again...

The grand opening is this week, and you can follow Cal's Own on Facebook and Twitter. When you visit, raise a glass (or a slice) to Cal - he's worked damn hard over the last few months!
